Scoping review of public health events during mass gatherings

Objective: Map previous experiences in the preparation and management of public health events during mass gatherings; and in the preparation and assessment of mass gatherings’ legacy.

Deliverables: One systematic scoping review report and its evidence tables highlighting for different types of countries:

  • Published experiences and lessons learned related to the preparation and management of any type of public health event during mass gatherings; and
  • Published experience frameworks and tools to better prepare and assess legacy of mass gatherings.

Summary of activities

From 1 721 documents identified by the search strategy, 148 were included. Eighty-five mass gatherings held in 52 countries were identified. Public health preparation activities were identified and described from 80 mass gatherings, response activities to a public health event from sixteen, and description of public health legacies from seventeen. No universally recognized framework or standardized approach used by mass gathering planners, to prepare and assess the legacy of mass gatherings was identified.
